Pop Art Movement & Pop Artists

We have all of those pop art pieces and so many more available here at Love Print NZ, along with animal art, landscape art, and more. But what defines pop art?

Emerging in the 1950s, the Pop Art movement aimed to democratise art and show that artistic inspiration can come from anywhere. Many pop artists described early pop art as a rebellion against what they found in museums - where the art had nothing to do with everyday life.

Much of the subject matter that interested pop artists involved recognisable imagery, including what could be seen in Hollywood movies, as well as product packaging, mass media advertising, and comic strips.

American vs British pop art movement

Both the UK and the USA were the forerunners when pop art emerged, but the approach of the artists tended to differ quite radically. The impersonal, representational, recognisable forms with hard edges in American pop art were a rebellion against the personal symbolism of abstract expressionism.

In contrast, British pop artists were more interested in what mass-produced imagery symbolised. The precursor to their side of the pop art movement is commonly cited to be The Independent Group (IG), a gathering of young sculptors, writers, critics, and painters. The Independent Group challenged ideas around what constituted fine art.

Some of the most well-known pop artists include:

  • David Hockney
  • Andy Warhol - known for the Campbell's soup cans
  • Richard Hamilton - among the first pop artists
  • Roy Lichtenstein
  • New Zealand's very own Billy Apple
  • Pauline Boty - one of the only female pop artists at the time

Pop art today

Although pop art began nearly seventy years ago, the pop art movement continues to influence contemporary art today. Many artists, even if not strictly pop artists, make work that comments on fine art, popular culture or mass media - ideas that began with American and British pop art.

Our selection of pop art prints here at Love Print NZ is a modern take on this highly influential art form. Check out our selection today!
